About Top-ix
TOP-IX (TOrino Piemonte Internet eXchange) is a non-profit consortium set up in 2002 with the aim of creating and managing a NAP (Neutral Access Point, otherwise known as Internet Exchange - IX) for the exchange of Internet traffic in North West Italy.
Internet Exchange
Interconnection services offered to consortium members by TOP-IX are designed to allow “peering agreements” to be implemented for the exchange of Internet traffic using BGP4 (IPv4) and BGP4+ (IPv6) protocols.
Interaction between connecting bodies is performed directly without any technical or financial involvement by TOP-IX. The Consortium is solely responsible for providing the configurations required by interested members on the transmission structure.
Unlike the standard concept of Internet Exchange (normally involving the setting up of one single location where access equipment is placed), the infrastructure offered by the Consortium to its members is geographically distributed over the territory.
Development Program
The Development Program (DP) was set up in 2006 to diffuse the use of broadband Internet and to foster innovation by providing support to early stage Internet ventures.
The DP works at the level of infrastructure (i.e. band, server, hosting, housing, etc.) and sets out to support the testing and trialling - at a pre-competitive stage - of technologies, services, operational and business models as well as to support innovative initiatives that use broadband Internet as a main tool.
