OpenSpime operates in the forthcoming field of The Internet Of Things. This coming extension of what is currently known as the Internet, connecting traditional computing devices, to objects in our environment, is projected to encompass within ten years over 25 billion devices (with projections farther out in time in excess of 100 billion network connected objects).

We believe that just as open standards were necessary to make the real value of connected networks to flourish, similarly only an Open Internet Of Things is going to turn the full potential of this next generation of technological advancement into reality. When email could not travel from one network to the other, or information silos isolated knowledge with no access to newcomers, only short term gains could be had by nearsighted companies which today are almost entirely forgotten. The ‘Inter’ in Internet comes from the understanding that interoperability, and transparent network support are needed to make sure that the innovation that application developers can bring to the users, happens unfettered.

As more and more devices become aware of the physical reality surrounding them, from mobile phones, to digital photo cameras, to network connected environmental sensors, the need of an overarching communication protocol, and scalable server environments connecting the data collected through it are a must.
